Because of its beauty, most of the Altmühl valley is protected as a nature park. The Altmühltal Nature Park, founded in 1969, is the third largest in Germany and stretches from the Altmühl Lake to the mouth of the Altmühl into the Danube near Kelheim. The best way to get to know the region is on the 250 kilometre Altmühltal cycle path, but longer stays in one place are also worthwhile. The "pearl of the Altmühl valley" is Riedenburg with its medieval castles and therefore a special attraction for holidaymakers.

Camping in the Altmühltal Nature Park is a special experience thanks to the wonderful nature of Franconia. The Altmühl, the second longest river in Bavaria, flows almost through the entire nature park - and at every bend in the river a new surprise awaits the visitor: narrow valleys alternate with flower-filled meadows, river meadows and dense forests.

The Altmühl reservoir offers excellent conditions for sailing and surfing.
