The western North Sea coast is characterized by wind and waves, ebb and flow. The eastern part of Schleswig-Holstein is characterized by hills and lakes. The Baltic Sea coast is interspersed with many bays and coves and is much quieter than its western counterpart. Well-known North Sea islands in Schleswig-Holstein are Sylt, Amrum and Föhr.
